POKOTABI / Kamepan
かめぱん向島店
At Mukojima's neighborhood bakery Kamepan, shelves are lined with freshly baked goods ranging from the popular Mentai Madonna and ryotei-style rolled omelet sandwiches to savory curry buns. Terrace seating and early morning hours make it an easy stop.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Among the continuous batches emerging from the ovens, the shop's established favorite is the Mentai Madonna. Crisp, aromatic French bread is soaked generously with a mellow, umami-rich spicy cod roe sauce; despite its substantial size, the balance of heat and savory fat makes it easy to finish in one sitting. Many visitors time their arrival around fresh bakes, and warming the bread briefly in a toaster oven at home revives the crackling bite of the outer crust.
The savory shelves showcase ideas rooted in Mukojima's local food culture. Created in collaboration with traditional restaurant Ryotei Kiyoshi, the Dashi Okami sandwich pairs a thick, dashi-rich rolled omelet with Kamepan's tender bread, finished with a sharp touch of mustard mayonnaise for a mature flavor profile. For those who prefer a sweeter profile, the Amame-chan uses sweet thick-rolled omelet instead. When looking for something heartier, the Curry Bancho filled with rich curry sauce or the original bun packed with mekabu seaweed are dependable options.
The stone oven also turns out everyday table breads, including a loaf sweetened with refined wasanbon sugar and classic baguettes. Kamepan opens from 8:00 on weekdays and 7:30 on weekends, making it a handy resource for early breakfast runs. Outside, terrace seating is available, complemented by a customer toaster oven and coffee so you can enjoy freshly bought bakes on the spot.
